Ris-Orangis (Essonne)140 solid wood homes

Europe's largest solid wood residential building

Eiffage Construction and co-contractor Mathis have completed for Promicéa the largest solid wood residence in Europe in 2016; with 140 apartments across four storeys and 8,800 m² of net floor area, in the Les Docks de Ris eco-district in Ris-Orangis.

The residence was designed by Wilmotte & Associés and benefited from the expertise of Woodeum, specialists in cross-laminated timber (CLT).

The façades are made up of 681 CLT solid wood panels and the floors of 211 panels.

Limiting the carbon footprint

The building is the first winner of the Bâtiment Bas Carbone (BBCA) label, promoted by Eiffage Construction, the project participants and companies in the sector.

One of the main advantages of the 1,911 m3 of CLT solid wood used is that it can store the equivalent of 880 tonnes of CO2.

This is equivalent to the building's heating and hot water consumption for 88 years.

The building's energy consumption aims to achieve a level of RT 2012 minus 30%, with power supplied by a collective biomass boiler.

Swift installation

The logistics involved in CLT solid wood walls require eight times fewer lorries than for a conventional project.

The façades arrive on site prefabricated, in the order of assembly.

With the help of three cranes, each floor was erected in six days, halving the time needed for the structural work.

By using this technique, completion time was reduced to one year, a saving of 33% compared with traditional time frames.
