A history of fusion
Symbio is a joint venture owned equally by Forvia, Michelin and Stellantis. It appointed Eiffage Construction to build its new plant under a design-build contract, spearheading low-carbon industries.
Located in the heart of Chemical Valley and the Lyon metropolitan area, this new site spans more than eight hectares and brings together Symbio's head office, its R&D centre and the high-capacity hydrogen systems manufacturing unit.
Carried out by Eiffage Construction as leader of the Design and Build consortium comprising Ingerop, Groupe 6, Arcadis, ER2I, Eiffage énergie Systèmes, Eiffage Route, Demcy and Exact Acoustic, this project is part of a global approach to secure growth between 2023 and 2030. It embodies Symbio's commitment to becoming a world leader in hydrogen-powered mobility.
The architecture of this project is an exceptional technological showcase for Symbio, highlighting the remarkable modularity of the interior spaces.
Covering an area of more than 25,000 m², including 6,500 m² dedicated to controlled-atmosphere rooms, this site stands out for its functionality as much as for its aesthetics.

A low-carbon industry
Our expertise was put to work for Symbio, designing high-performance solutions that incorporate the latest environmental standards, architectural research, quality materials and energy optimisation.
This proactive approach resulted in a number of exemplary initiatives:
-
The reuse of materials present on the site after crushing and recovery;
-
Selective dismantling of facilities, followed by careful recovery and reuse of materials, thereby significantly reducing the need to transport materials;
-
A «no outgoing» approach for contaminated soil, ensuring responsible and environmentally friendly treatment;
-
Installation of the equipment and machinery required for the activities
-
design, installation and maintenance of HVAC systems to optimise energy efficiency and user comfort.
-
Waste heat recovery, re-injected into the office heating network, demonstrating our commitment to energy efficiency;
-
Electrical installations also incorporating automation;
-
The electricity generated by the hydrogen fuel cell tests will be fed back into the Symbio grid;
-
Installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof;
-
The integration of a BMS (Building Management System) and a CTM (Centralised Technical Management system) guarantees intelligent, energy-efficient control of technical installations;
-
The installation of an electrolyser enabling Symbio to produce its own hydrogen;
-
Audiovisual integration to meet visual and auditory communication needs;
-
Energy-efficient outdoor lighting, ensuring safety and comfort in outdoor areas;
-
Operation and maintenance of facilities.
The site is energy self-sufficient and has also obtained BREEAM Very Good 65% rating and carbon-neutral certification.
