Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dome)Lycée Gergovie school:a sustainable, low-carbon high school

A concentrate of innovation and sustainability

Located in the heart of the Saint-Jean district, within the Clermont Métropole eco-city, the Nouveau Lycée de l'Agglomération Clermontoise or Lycée Gergovie school extends across almost 19,000 m² and is a shining example of innovations and sustainability

It is aligned with the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional authority's desire to transform this outlying commercial and industrial area into a dynamic new district open to the city, as well as the Eiffage Group's low-carbon environmental approach.

Bio-based wood and straw, positive energy, use of renewable energy, etc. All these elements mean the operation received E4C2 label Biosourcé level 3 and BBCA certification.

Low-carbon construction for an innovative high school

The school is also designated as a "carbon sink", thanks in particular to the large presence of wood.

Representing 3,900 m3this wood is bio-based, local – as it comes from the Massif Central mountain range – and partly prefabricated: 11,000 m² of timber-framed walls (bioMOB) are required for its construction, automatically capturing carbon, one of the properties of this material.

When it comes to thermal insulation, a bio-based material has also been used, namely straw, which also favours short supply chains because it comes from the Auvergne region.

Located 30 km from the site, a Savare workshop specially created for this purpose prefabricates the walls, meaning a reduction in transport round trips, carbon footprint, site disruption, and a faster speed of execution.

A local and social project

The approach of Eiffage Construction and its subsidiary Savare is also social and societal. By using local natural resources, the short supply chain helps to create wealth in the region and the Savare workshop has helped to create 10 jobs, specifically needed for the assembly of the BioMOB modules.

The school was designed by Clermont-Ferrand-based CRR Architecture, with the aim of offering a high quality of life and work for students and staff, in particular through a multitude of spaces that provide breathing space, meeting places and individual or group workspaces.
