Context
Covering almost 20 hectares, the town of Châtenay-Malabry built a mixed-use eco-district on the historical site of école Centrale Paris.
Enhance the town entrance and the functional mix, connect the new district to the surrounding urban fabric, develop urban agriculture at the heart of a low-carbon district characterised by the circular economy and promote a high-quality green environment while preserving the existing biodiversity in the town: these are the strong ambitions for this district.

Description of development operation
In July 2016, the town of Châtenay-Malabry launched a consultation of developers for the reconversion of the former école Centrale site as part of the formation of a semi-public development company or SEMOP.

Issues
- Creation of a district heating network.
- Use of bio-based materials.
- Soft mobility is encouraged.
- Use of recycled concrete from the old school buildings.
- Surface dedicated to urban agriculture.
- Local production for short supply chains.
- Sustainable waste management.
- Rainwater management: target zero discharge into the network.
- Green infrastructure (Parc de Sceaux, Coulée Verte, Verrières forest).
Place LaVallée square
Thanks to the future T10 tramway station located in front of the main square and numerous bus routes, LaVallée will be easily accessible by public transport but also for motorists, who will be able to use an underground car park.
The planted promenade
The LaVallée district is naturally bordered by two major green spaces: the Parc de Sceaux and the Coulée Verte.
A wide promenade comprising themed gardens will cross the district to link these two green spaces, which are popular with walkers, hikers and joggers.
The urban farm
Close to the "Coulée Verte" greenway that runs along the length of the TGV tunnel, an urban farm will be developed, occupying a hectare of land. An exceptional approach that is rare on this scale in the Paris region. The urban farm concept meets the requirements of sustainable agriculture and revives the tradition of orchards and plant nurseries that has marked the history of Châtenay-Malabry. Local production will make it possible to organise short supply chains with the direct sale of locally-grown produce, as well as supplying school canteens from time to time. The farm will also be offering educational events, tasting workshops and more.
The shopping avenue
Along the avenue stretching from the north to the south of LaVallée, a new range of shops, which does not yet exist in Châtenay-Malabry, will create a lively place to live. Clothing, decoration, beauty, sports and wellness shops, restaurants, etc. are just some of the reasons to come to LaVallée for a spot of shopping or a stroll. A supermarket will offer 1,700 m² of retail space to local residents and visitors, who will be able to park in the car park beneath the store. This shopping avenue will start from a large, lively square on the Avenue de la Division-Leclerc side, opposite the «LaVallée» tram station.
Third place
In addition, a «third place» – a new kind of hybrid, ephemeral and original cultural venue dedicated to discovery and learning around the theme of health, well-being and ecology – will be set up in the restored and transformed former école Centrale Gymnasium. This convivial space is open to all, offering new artistic, gastronomic and physical experiences.
