Wood and straw construction: discover bioMOB, one of the skills of Savare, a subsidiary of Eiffage Construction

What is the bioMOB? It is a wood-frame wall (MOB) manufactured by Savare, a subsidiary of Eiffage Construction with expertise in wooden construction, whose insulation is made of straw. This manufacturing process guarantees a high-performance, environmentally friendly product that is produced off-site. Using the example of the bioMOBs installed on our low-carbon site at the New High School in the Clermont-Ferrand area, our teams present the many advantages of this product.

The wood-frame wall is, by definition, respectful of the environment: a biosourced material, wood captures CO2 during its growth and is here enriched with straw insulation, also a biosourced material which offers excellent thermal performance.

The design of the bioMOB was based on the professional rules for straw construction published by the French straw construction network RFCP. Eiffage Construction, in conjunction with the CSTB (Scientific and Technical Centre for Construction), has filed a technical opinion for the construction site for the fire behaviour of the facades.

Reducing the environmental impact is not limited to the use of wood and straw: Savare uses materials from local sources or favours short supply chains. For example, on the site of the New High School in Clermont-Ferrand, which is aiming for E4C2 certification, the wood comes from forests in the Massif Central and the straw from the Limagne plains in Auvergne: it therefore only travels 30 km to reach the Savare workshop. This nomadic workshop, set up specifically for this operation, is located close to the construction site, which reduces transport between the factory and the site, as well as the noises and installation time on the construction site.

In addition to the environmental aspect, this initiative has a social impact: by recruiting 10 workers to produce these bioMOBs, Savare is encouraging professional integration.

Congratulations to all the teams involved in this project!
