At the beginning of September, the Belgian company Herbosch-Kiere, which specialises in port works and is a subsidiary of Eiffage Benelux, and the German company Hecker Bau, won the contract for the repair and reinforcement of two port dams in the port of Klaipeda, in Lithuania. The Port of Klaipeda will contribute more than EUR 40 million to the project. Work will begin in March 2021 and is expected to last about two years. This is the first time the two companies will work in Lithuania.
Built between 1834 and 1861, it was time for the harbour dikes of more than two kilometres to be quickly renovated.
The renovation work mainly involves the removal of the old stone base and the subsequent installation of a new layer of stone protection of different weights and sizes. In total, more than 400,000 tonnes of stones will be used.
Among the existing elements of the harbour dikes, 25-tonne tetrapods and concrete cubes of up to 40 tonnes will be reused in the new construction. In addition, the project also involves the installation of a new combi wall (a system combining sheet piling and tubular piles) made of steel anchored under water. Finally, the upper concrete layer of the dikes will also be renovated and dredging will be carried out.
The maritime port of Klaipeda in Lithuania will invest €352 million in port infrastructure and dredging between 2020 and 2023. The objective is to increase both the security and the competitiveness of the port. In addition, the port wants to be able to accommodate larger vessels in the future.
