Urban planning and sustainable city: LaVallée gets the Ecoquartier label stage 2

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Ecoquartier national approach, the LaVallée project team approved in February 2020 the second stage that will ultimately lead to the Ecoquartier label – each of the four stages being marked by the awarding of a diploma.

One of the objectives pursued by Eiffage in its development projects is to provide residents and users with access to biodiversity-rich areas that facilitate the reintegration of nature into the city. The site of the LaVallée ecodistrict in Châtenay-Malabry is a fine example of the integration of nature in the city.

The project for the future LaVallée ecodistrict in Châtenay-Malabry, south of Paris, spanning more than 20 hectares, is a major part of nature. Eiffage Aménagement’s ambition is to create a high-quality urban space in partnership with experts from the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux (LPO, France’s first environmental organisation). Seven hectares of landscaped spaces will be developed, including one hectare of urban farm; 500 new trees will be planted as well as a walk of two hectares; 116 trees have been preserved, including 54 lindens, four very large trees (two oaks, a cedar from Lebanon, a plane tree) and several ambars. Open-field plantings are favoured for landscaping. Islands of freshness and freshness courses will be created to minimize the effects of summer heat events.

Two protected species, the graceful conocephale (a species of grasshopper) and the pipistrelle (a species of bat), are subject to specific measures (surface protection, soundings). Installation of signalling devices to limit impacts on nocturnal species developed by Eiffage Énergie Systèmes and Eiffage Route (Luminokrom® photoluminescent paint and lighting adapted to the right need Luciole®) promote the maintenance of these bats. These animals are able to swallow 1000 mosquitoes per night and will be able to protect future inhabitants from possible invasions.

Ecological monitoring of the operating site will be ensured. The project also aims to be labelled "Biodivercity Ready® ", a new label developed by the CIBI (International Biodiversity and Real Estate Council) knowing that this pilot project will validate the indicators integrated in the label. In partnership with the researchers of the I-Site Future initiative of the Gustave Eiffel University, an analytical tool will be proposed to evaluate the well-being thus created. At the same time, ecological monitoring of the operational site will be carried out, in particular with the LPO teams.
All these initiatives made it possible to obtain the 2nd stage of the Ecoquartier label.

As a large-scale project within the Group’s global low-carbon approach, the ecoquartier LaVallée is really encouraging synergies at Eiffage since Eiffage Aménagement, Eiffage Immobilier, Eiffage Construction, Eiffage Energie Systèmes, Eiffage Route are involved, as well as the Environment Quality Department and the Sustainable Development and Transverse Innovation Department.
